I promised that this release will be RC, but it turns out I lied: a lot more feedback and feature requests poured in as the tool gained more and more acceptance, a lot of this feedback looked like something worth addressing before I declare v1. On top of it I had a lot more work in my daily life which spilled into my night life - and as a result, I am late with a whole bunch of features I expected to have done by now.

However, there are tons of features, improvements, and bug fixes that accumulated over the last almost 6 months that needed to get out as a release. Hence Beta 3.

To get the full list of new stuff here, examine the check-ins that happened since July. Just a few features from that list:
- syntax highlighter that covers C, C, JavaScript, C#, SQL, HTML, and XML (note that there is another MSI that needs to be installed AFTER the main MSI)
- customizeable HTML email templates
- more robust support for branching, the diffs are now viewable

Notable bugs fixed:
- improved handling of complex mappings in perforce/SD
- fixed problems with file names that contain non-alphanumeric characters
- added detection logic for files with mixed line endings
- many improvements in setup

This is likely to be the last release before the RC is out - I am running short on features that are critical for v1.

New single-pane diff view (a la windiff) for those with a smaller screen, selectable from the Settings page.
Better navigation: F7/F8 keyboard shortcuts allow one to move between the changes.
Time stamps are now shown in local time rather than UTC.
review.exe has gained a lot of features that allow to better integrate it into existing development tools such as patch distribution, bug databases, etc. For more details: Malevich and external tools.
SQL detection in setup has been considerably improved.
Several small bug fixes.

Note: This upgrade requires upgrading review.exe on client machines!

Features:

(1) Setup has been augmented to deploy on all newer Windows platforms. If you wanted to run Malevich on your personal workstation, you can now do this without going through the hassle of Visual Studio-based deployment process!
(2) review.exe can recognize TFS server and workspace based on current directory.
(3) A small fix in review.exe - a quote in the PATH variable caused it to crash. Not any more.
(4) A small fix in the web site code - attempt to submit settings without a font selection used to fail. Fixed now.

This release upgrades web site and review.exe. The database code does not change.

NOTE: On new platforms pay attention to the firewall settings. If review.exe does not connect, or a web site is not accessible, you need to manually open ports. On all platforms, SQL Server database engine (sqlservr.exe) and SQL browser (sqlbrowser.exe) must be granted exceptions on all platforms if review.exe throws a network exception, and Web server must be granted exception on Vista if the web site is not accessible from the clients.

This is a primarily setup-centered release. If you have already installed Malevich, you do not need to upgrade to this.

It fixes a bunch of problems that people had with setup when deploying to stripped down SQL installations. It also supports renaming Malevich web root as part of the setup, and the website code was streamlined to allow hosting of multiple Malevich client teams on a single server.

Other than that, no new functionality and a couple of tiny bug fixes.

Disclaimer: Malevich bits are stable, but setup is at an early stage. I've done limited testing, but do be very careful if you use this build to upgrade an existing installation: backup everything! It can be destructive.

Important: If you run into problems, please file a bug in Issue Tracker. Do not create reviews that are essentially bug reports - codeplex does not allow me to respond to reviews, and therefore I cannot help you.

Tested configurations: Windows Server 2008 + SQL Server 2008 x86 and x64. The setup will not work on Server 2003, Vista, or Windows 7. You still need to deploy from the build environment for these. It also does not support EWS 2007 - if you plan to run in this mode, you will have to configure notifier post-factum.

Finally, we have a real packaged build! If you had been putting off trying Malevich, you should wait no more.

Disclaimer: Malevich bits are stable, but setup is at an early stage. I've done limited testing, but do be very careful if you use this build to upgrade an existing installation: backup everything! It can be destructive.

Important:
(1) After you install the MSI, click on "Configure Malevich" link on the desktop. The MSI is just a file wrapper - the real setup us done via this configuration program. Likewise, you have to run this program on upgrade and before you uninstall it. The configurator copies all Malevich bits to different location from the Program Files folder where MSI unwraps, so to affect the running bits Malevich you must run the configurator.

(2) If the installer can not detect an instance of SQL Server running on your computer, ensure that SQL Browser service is running, and that it comes from SQL Server 2008 (SQL 10) installation. This is important if you have a version of SQL 2005 on the same machine (which you would if you have Visual Studio 2008 on it).

(3) If the installation fails at the database creation step, please run the following command in the CMD prompt:
reg add HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0
